The Food and Drug Administration is advising consumers not to purchase or use Viagra®, the only erectile dysfunction treatment available to treat.
The FDA issued a black-boxed warning for Viagra in April 2013, in which it said the drug was not approved for use in men with low blood pressure or heart failure.
The FDA said that since the drug's launch in June 2013, there has been no significant increase in the number of deaths linked to heart failure and heart attacks, and no deaths that have occurred during treatment.
“The drug has been associated with dangerously low blood pressure and heart failure, and this has caused patients and physicians to be reluctant to take it,” the agency said in a statement.
In March, the FDA issued a black-boxed warning for Viagra, including a possible connection to a heart attack or stroke.
The FDA also said it has not been informed by any study that has been done to assess the risks of taking Viagra.
In March, it said that there have been no reported cases of heart failure or stroke that have occurred with Viagra.
“The FDA is making significant progress in the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED), which has contributed to at least 25,000 deaths per year in the United States,” the agency said in a statement.
“This information is critical for patients and physicians who use Viagra to enhance their sexual health and reduce the risk of heart failure and stroke, including those with underlying heart disease.”
The FDA's statement said that the drug was not approved for use in men with low blood pressure or heart failure or heart problems that have occurred with previous treatment.
“The FDA’s black-boxed warning is incorrect, and patients and physicians should be cautious of using this drug,” the FDA said.
The FDA said that it has not received any reports of serious cardiovascular events or death from Viagra or related medications, and has not determined if Viagra could increase the risk of heart disease.
“These data are not indicative of increased cardiovascular risks for Viagra in the United States, and there is no strong evidence to suggest Viagra increases the risk of heart disease or stroke,” the agency said.
The FDA's statement said that the warning was based on data from a placebo-controlled trial of Viagra in more than 300,000 men, and is not evidence based.
“The results of the trial do not demonstrate the safety or efficacy of Viagra in patients with cardiovascular disease,” the agency said.
